The homeowners wanted to update and personalize the look and style of their kitchen, add more preparation and storage space, and enlarge the dining and sitting areas.

Solution:

The home is located in a neighborhood of colonial-style homes built in the 1970’s and abuts wooded conservation land. In order to maintain the style of the home and maximize the benefit of the conservation land, we added the new dining and sitting areas off the back of the home and surrounded it with windows, giving a panoramic view of the outdoors and allowing ample light into the space. A unique design feature of the new dining area is the octagonal ceiling which posed a construction challenge but gives the room dimension and character.

One of the homeowners grew up in Bermuda and wanted to create a tranquil, tropical feel to the kitchen and eating area. Glass was chosen as a prominent design element for its similarities to water with its bluish color and glossy texture. A clear square glass-tile was used on the backsplash with a glass-tile wave accent strip. A custom designed and manufactured glass was used for the countertop of the island eating area. All other countertops are in silver sea green granite chosen to complement the glass tiles. Lighting fixtures over the table in the dining area and the island are also made of glass. Maple cabinets were custom-made with a soft white wash finish which resembles the color of sand. The hardware is in a wave pattern to tie into the flow of the wave pattern in the backsplash. Hardwood floors replaced outdated tile to warm up the kitchen and new dining area. A soft blue was used on the walls to further enhance the tranquility of the space.

Increasing the amount and placement of cabinetry helped to fulfill many of the homeowners’ goals. The island was designed to accommodate full cabinets on both sides providing desired storage and a larger surface area for food preparation. The island also has a sitting area for casual dining and for use in entertaining. Floor to ceiling pantry cabinets fill the back wall and additional cabinetry surrounding the stove provide plenty of storage space and work areas. A desk area was added as well as a built in window seat in the sitting area which increase the functionality of the space. All the appliances were updated in a stainless steel finish to again complement the soft subtle tones of the kitchen. New additions to the appliances are a combination wall oven/microwave and a warming drawer which the homeowners wanted for ease in entertaining.

They wanted their kitchen to be a place where friends and family could comfortably gather and enjoy.

Solution: The island was a crucial feature to the homeowners. We designed it with two levels so it can be used for work and dining. By angling the ends, we were able to gain the length to accommodate the family without it feeling too big. The island was a crucial feature to the homeowners. We designed it with two levels so it can be used for work and dining. By angling the ends, we were able to gain the length to accommodate the family without it feeling too big. Lastly, we used a creamy “Brie” color on the island while the perimeter cabinets are in a deep, rich cherry in order to define and balance the space.

One of the challenges we encountered during design related to the ceiling of the proposed addition. The new attic above the kitchen would require an access panel that could have jeopardized the overall look. We used a tray ceiling which reduced the attic volume sufficiently and, as an added benefit, created visual interest to the space.

The new space is large enough to meet their family and entertaining needs and, with careful selection of finishes, it has the warm and cozy feel the homeowners desired.

Solution: By changing the location of the appliances, eliminating the closet and adding an island, we were able to achieve many of their objectives. The finishes were replaced with cherry wood cabinets, hardwood floors, granite countertops and high end appliances. Accents such as the sage color on the island and the custom designed tile vignette over the stove spice up the space and are reflective of the homeowners’ style. We were able to create a highly functional, upscale kitchen with unique accents without increasing the footprint or breaking the bank.

Transitional Style on a Budget http://blog.thekitchenexpress.net/416/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=416 http://blog.thekitchenexpress.net/416/#comments Tue, 01 May 2012 13:51:32 +0000 admin http://thekitchenexpress.net/?p=416 The homeowner felt her kitchen was outdated, dark and cramped.

Solution: While the budget did not allow for us to increase the footprint of the kitchen, opening up the wall between the kitchen and family room created a more open feel and allowed space for a breakfast bar. An updated and more upscale look was achieved with shaker style natural cherry wood cabinets, stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, a slate backsplash, and hardwood floors. With creative design and careful selection of materials, this homeowner was able to realize her dreams for her kitchen while respecting the budget.

Our plan was to remove the walls between the kitchen, dining room and living room and open up the whole space. The completely remodeled kitchen featuring new cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and a new center island is now a showcase, and the focus of both the living and dining rooms.

The homeowners were also quite concerned that any “modern” updates would not take away from its inherent architecture and style. To avoid this, we used earthy tones and natural materials in the kitchen renovation, and matched the white baseboards and trim. However the most dramatic decision we made was to add Caribbean Rosewood hardwood floors in the kitchen and dining room, and extend it out through the living room, hallway, and stairs. This design feature ties all the living spaces together, and helps create a greater sense of flow.

As a finishing touch, we added new accent lighting to complement the increased natural lighting flowing through the open concept living area. Our clients now have more workspace in the kitchen, better workflow, and most importantly a welcoming entertainment area they can enjoy with friends and family.

To make this area useful and maintain the look of the kitchen, we removed the grill and cut out the stone to add a built-in book shelf with a decorative column. Another challenge was moving refrigerator to the other interior wall without having it jut into the room. We were able to push the wall back allowing the refrigerator to be flush with minimal impact to the existing living room.

Craftsmanship is a top priority in any home remodeling project. It complements the quality of a product and can make even inexpensive choices look good, last longer, and require less maintenance.

Good design is a key element in any successful remodeling or building project. Your success begins with a vision and a team of talented professionals who can craft that vision into a set of plans, build according to the plans, and deliver an award winning product that will stand the test of time. Below are several ideas of what excites us in a home.

  • Big kitchen and Family room with an open floor plan – Most families spend the majority of their time in this area of the home and are asking for spacious, but cozy gathering spaces. An open plan is great for entertaining as well.
  • A fireplace in the family room, or preferably a hearth built into a partition that delineates the kitchen and family room.
  • Architectural details – To add warmth and character to a larger area we recommend using architectural details such as crown molding, wainscoting, and bead board.
  • A high, wood- beamed custom art ceiling would serve as a classic showpiece and give your home uniqueness.
  • Hard wood flooring on first floor, up staircase and second floor hallway- This is a common approach although some prefer hardwood in the bedrooms as well. Area rugs on the 1st floor and runners on the stairs and hallway add warmth, provide safety from slipping, and protect the floor’s finish.
    • One of our experts’ top choice would be to use stained, wide, quarter- sawn oak with rugged look 12 x 12 tile between the island and work zone in the kitchen.

  • Well constructed custom cabinets -There are some very cleverly designed cabinets available today to serve the storage needs of any room in your home, including the kitchen,  bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry room, mudroom, home office, family room and basement. Cabinets are built in several different styles and can be painted or stained to your liking. Hardware selections are extensive as well, and allow you to match the cabinet style to the rest of your home.
    • For instance, one of our experts loves the Greenfield Frameless line in some type of exotic engineered veneer – very crisp clean lines – minimal moldings – very European style/modern.
  • Built-in bookcases – bookcases are a classic addition to any home and are useful for, not only holding books, but for displaying family photos and other accessories.
  • Pantry in kitchen – Pantries are back in style and with good reason. They offer organization to your kitchen, creating a much more efficient use of space. Also, cabinets can be expensive and pantries help to reduce the amount of cabinet space necessary. Pantries often evoke warm childhood memories and more of our clients are requesting them.
  • Mudroom – Essential to maintaining cleanliness, and providing space for shoes, coats, hats, backpacks, etc., mudrooms are one of the most desirable aspects of the modern home. A well designed mudroom provides that proverbial “place for everything.”

Kitchens are the most remodeled room in the house. Typically the kitchen area is also the center of activity, the conference room of the home, the dining area, the absolute hub.  The kitchen is the most viewed area in your home and for that matter the greatest investment in a remodeling project.

  • When addressing the kitchen from a complete remodel or custom home build, design the kitchen facing east to catch the morning sun. But remember to use UV protection windows to protect wood flooring and furniture from fading.
  • Appliances – A few brands really rise above the rest. Stick to Energy Star Rated Appliances for efficiency
  • Walk-in Pantry Closet
  • Countertops – There are many viable options for countertops. The composition, grain, and color are all important aspects of the design of your kitchen. Granite, Quarts, and Concrete are among the most popular types.
  • Flooring – Two types of flooring are used in kitchen remodels, Wood and tile. After asking our professionals a stained wide quarter sawn oak floor is a nice option. Meet that with a 12×12 tile between the island and work zone and you have a beautiful combination.
  • Kitchen Island – are a perfect addition to a kitchen. The island can house the dishwasher as well as a recommended prep sink with a separate filtered cold water tap.

As we move away from the kitchen remember, functionality and accessibility are key aspects of a home. A well designed home will create open space. For storage and accessibility, a butler’s pantry separating kitchen and dining room serves as extra cabinet space and serving buffer zone.

With the kitchen being the focal point of the home, it is also nice for it to have a separate entrance. Entering the home through a mudroom with cabinetry and coat hooks is one way at achieving this feature.
