Kitchen Remodel for a Growing Family

Need:

As their three young children got older, the homeowners felt they were outgrowing their kitchen. In addition, they found the layout restrictive and especially did not like having the refrigerator located in a heavily trafficked area. They wanted their kitchen to be a place where friends and family could comfortably gather and enjoy.

Solution:
The island was a crucial feature to the homeowners. We designed it with two levels so it can be used for work and dining. By angling the ends, we were able to gain the length to accommodate the family without it feeling too big. Lastly, we used a creamy “Brie” color on the island while the perimeter cabinets are in a deep, rich cherry in order to define and balance the space.

One of the challenges we encountered during design related to the ceiling of the proposed addition. … Read More »

Bright Transitional Style Kitchen Remodel

Posted on May 1st, by admin in Portfolio, Transitional Kitchens. No Comments

Need:

This 40-year old raised ranch frustrated our clients  with the small kitchen area and limiting layout of the kitchen, living room and dining room.

Solution:

Our plan was to remove the walls between the kitchen, dining room and living room and open up the whole space. The completely remodeled kitchen featuring new cabinetry, stainless steel appliances, and a new center island is now a showcase, and the focus of both the living and dining rooms.

However the renovation did present one fairly significant challenge. We had to transfer the weight of the main support beam without disturbing the finished basement ceiling below. To do this, we removed more of the subfloor in the kitchen and cut in new beam work.

The homeowners were also quite concerned that any “modern” updates would not take away from its inherent architecture and style. To avoid … Read More »

Kitchens are the Most Remodeled Room in the House

Posted on April 24th, by admin in Blog. No Comments

People remodel for numerous reasons including design, functionality, resale value, entertaining, and style. Whatever your reason may be, here are a few ideas that may contribute to your ideal kitchen remodeling project.

When addressing the kitchen from a complete remodel or custom home build, design the kitchen facing east to catch the morning sun. But remember to use UV protection windows to protect wood flooring and furniture from fading.

How New Homes Earn the ENERGY STAR

Posted on January 30th, by admin in Blog. No Comments

To earn the Energy Star, a home must meet strict guidelines set out by the U.S. EPA. In meeting these guidelines, a home will become 20-30% more efficient than standard homes built to code.  A series of energy efficient improvements that could be included, but not limited to, in the home design are:

Effective Insulation Systems – Properly installed and inspected insulation in floors, walls, and attics ensures even temperatures throughout the house, reduced energy use, and increased comfort.
High Performance Windows – Energy-efficient windows employ advanced technologies, such as protective coatings and improved frames, to help keep heat in during winter and out during summer. These windows also block damaging ultraviolet sunlight that can discolor carpets and furnishings.
Tight Construction and Ducts – Sealing holes and cracks in the home’s “envelope” and in heating and cooling duct systems helps reduce drafts, moisture, … Read More »

Kitchen Remodel for Entertaining

Posted on January 1st, by admin in Portfolio, Transitional Kitchens. No Comments

Need:

The homeowner is a single professional who wanted to completely renovate her home to reflect her style and way of life. She wanted to add space and perform updates that would enhance the comfort and functionality for herself and her family who visit often.

Solution:

The existing dining room was sacrificed to add more space for the kitchen and bar area. The island design fully utilizes the space by including seating, sink area, dishwasher, microwave and one of the two ovens. The use of tile on the floor makes this well trafficked area easier to maintain. Features such as the hand blown glass pendant lights, gray quartz countertops, coffee colored glaze on the cabinets and backsplash pattern with accent tiles give this space a unique, warm and sophisticated feel.

This whole house remodel included the addition of a master bedroom suite … Read More »
