Traditional Kitchen with Island
The homeowners who enjoy cooking and entertaining wanted to change the look, improve the flow and increase the functionality of their kitchen.
By eliminating the peninsula, the island was enlarged to include space for seating, food preparation, sink, dishwasher, microwave, warming drawer and storage. The new layout also permitted room for another food preparation area which is ideal for entertaining. Warmer tones and new features such as the arched entryway, half walls with columns, French doors and enhanced lighting help to completely transform this kitchen.
Existing conditions created project challenges. In the far corner of the kitchen there was a rarely used indoor grill whose stone surround was attached to the floor to ceiling fireplace in the adjoining family room. To make this area useful and maintain the look of the kitchen, we removed the grill and cut out the stone to add a built-in book shelf with a decorative column. Another challenge was moving refrigerator to the other interior wall without having it jut into the room. We were able to push the wall back allowing the refrigerator to be flush with minimal impact to the existing living room.
